Noor Inayat-Khan

A Woman of Conspicuous Courage

Chapter 3:
Recruitment

Noor signs up

Someone noted that noted that Noor’s fluent French could be useful to the Special Operations Executive. She was called for an interview with SOE in November 1942.

The recruiter described her as “sure and confident…I had not the slightest doubt she could do it.” He felt she would be careful and patient – vital qualities in a wireless operator and user of codes. In February 1943 she signed the Official Secrets Act and began agent training.

A fellow WAAF recalled how Noor just disappeared. “No word, no sign, no letter to explain a sudden posting. Just her blankets stacked neatly on the bedspring.” She had entered the shadowy world of the SOE.

“I find myself constantly remembering... the dark quiet eyes, the soft voice, and the fine spirit glowing in her.”
